Bridgerton Season 2 just dropped on Netflix on March 25, but series star Nicola Coughlan is already pondering what the future holds for her character, Penelope Featherington (aka Lady Whistledown).
Penelope has long harbored a secret crush on her best friend's older brother, Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton). But will ignorant Colin ever notice that Penelope is in love with him? Chances are that Colin and Penelope will end up together on the show, which makes Coughlan a little nervous.
Colin and Penelope's romance is at the center of 'Romancing Mister Bridgerton'
Bridgerton is based on a series of novels by Julia Quinn. Each book - and thus far, each season of the show - focuses on a different Bridgerton brother. Daphne (Phoebe Dyvenor) took center stage in Season 1, while Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) takes center stage in Season 2. The third Bridgerton book, A Gentleman's Bid , is about Benedict (Luke Thompson) and his romance with a mysterious woman he meets at a masquerade ball. The fourth, Romancer Monsieur Bridgerton tells the story of Colin and Penelope.
Netflix has already renewed Bridgerton for seasons 3 and 4. While the show continues to draw heavily from Quinn's books, there are some steamy scenes between Colin and Penelope in a future season of Bridgerton .
Nicola Coughlan says Colin and Penelope's season will be 'pretty racy'
Coughlan is well aware that she and Newton's characters eventually end up together in Quinn's novels. In a recent interview with the Belfast Telegraph, she opened up about how she felt about having to shoot one of the show's famous sex scenes.
“Luke Newton, luckily, is the nicest person in the world, and I actually texted him last night saying, ‘Oh my god, it’s going to be so crazy that it’s us someday,’” said Coughlan.
Bridgerton hires intimacy coordinators to make sure the actors feel comfortable shooting sex scenes, which is a plus for Coughlan.
“I have such confidence in them,” the Girls of Derry star said. “And I certainly thought about it. It's slightly terrifying, and also, I have a feeling Colin and Penelope's series is going to be pretty racy! I really don't know, I just have a feeling. It's also a big part for fans of the book – I know the scenes readers want. Don't worry, I've been sent the fan art! »
Season 3 of “Bridgerton” could focus on Penelope and Colin
If Bridgerton continues to follow the books, Season 3 should focus on Benedict. But it's possible the show will shake things up next season and bring attention to Penelope and Colin.
"We're not necessarily going in order, but we're going to see each of the siblings and their stories," executive producer Shonda Rhimes told ET (via Twitter ).
Creator and showrunner Chris Van Dusen pointed out that the series has done "a lot of work in these first two seasons in terms of setting up Penelope and Colin's love story."
"There's so much longing and so much angst that it's going to be really satisfying when the show really focuses on the two of them," he told E! News.
For his part, Newton says he doesn't know what the future holds for his character.
"We have no idea how close they're going to stay in their future relationship or how it's going to go," he told E! News.
“You never know which storylines are going to overlap. So maybe we have a time lag,” he added.
